SPOKANE, Wash. — With rising food costs, two local organizations are coming together to make sure Spokane families have food on the table this holiday season.
Findlay Downtown Toyota, along with the support of the Gonzaga Men’s Basketball Team, is teaming up to help Second Harvest by hosting a community food drive on November 21.
Eric Williams works at Second Harvest and said the food insecurity in our region is rising.
“Over the last few years, inflation has just hammered families and need has especially gone up with working families,” he said.
According to Second Harvest, food prices have gone up more than 20% over the last four years.
“Our partner agencies who are on the front lines, they are reporting to us that more and more folks who are working families are needing to access food banks,” said Williams.
Seeing the need, Findlay Downtown Toyota wanted to lend a helping hand this holiday season.
“It’s Thanksgiving. So, there’s a lot of people out there that really use this service,” said Scott Sloan, Findlay Toyota Downtown Marketing Director.
All day on November 21, the dealership will accept food donations for Second Harvest, and from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m., the Gonzaga Men’s Basketball Team will make a special appearance to sign autographs and take photos.
“We’re welcoming everybody to come in and be part of this great cause,” said Sloan.
Williams said that while it is great to see so much support for the food pantry during the holidays, the need exists year-round, and supply often dwindles once the new year sets in.
“There’s a lot of programs which is great for us and other organizations who really help out during the holidays, but we take a big breath and come back in January and there’s still need,” he said.
Volunteers and donations are needed year-round.
