After decades sharing news, weather and that unforgettable personality with the viewers of the Inland Northwest, Good Morning Northwest weather anchor Mark Peterson is turning off his alarm clock and leaving daily news broadcasting behind.
Mark will retire from daily news next month but will still be a valuable part of the 4 News Now and KXLY Extreme Team family.
Mark first found his voice on the radio in Montana in 1982. He moved to television in 1987, working in Bozeman, Billings and Northern California before landing in Spokane.
“Over half of my career has been with the KXLY family,” Mark said. “So many changes and so many people I have gotten to know and work with. It really amazes me how time has flown by.”
He has been a news anchor and weather forecaster. He has truly made the community better through his work leading the KXLY Extreme Team. Mark has rallied contractors and volunteers for more than 100 projects of all sizes. The Extreme Team has remodeled homes, renovated baseball fields, assisted non-profits and lit up the park near the children’s hospital for the holidays.
Mark is also one of Spokane’s busiest emcees and auctioneers, hosting countless charity events during his “off” time.
He is the only person we know of who has brought both a camel AND a monkey onto the news set.
“People ask all the time, what’s Mark really like when he’s not on TV?” said 4 News Now News Director Melissa Luck. “He’s exactly what you see. He’s boisterous, talkative, funny – and has the biggest heart. Mark thrives on helping people in need – and we’re so grateful he’s going to carry on that mission for us.”
Mark’s last regular day on the air will be at the end of February. After that, you’ll still see him often, leading Extreme Team projects and cracking dad jokes on the air when we need him.
“This will be 43 years to the month that I began talking for a living,” Mark said. “As this part nears, I am filled with great memories. That’s the next step – making more memories and adventures without a 2:15 a.m. alarm going off.”
A father of three, Mark was inducted into the Silver Circle of the Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Mark has three sons and is married to his wife, Jana.
