SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown signed a first-in-the-nation ordinance aimed at getting rid of barriers to employment for homeless individuals.
The ‘Ban the Address’ ordinance would prohibit employers from requiring an address on job applications.
Proponents say homeless individuals having to provide the address of a shelter or PO box can lead to discrimination.
The ordinance passed the city council with a 6-1 vote.
It will go into effect 30 days following the mayor’s signing.
