While you’re out and about soaking up the springtime weather, you might just see a few turtles in our local ponds and trails.
May 23 is World Turtle Day, a day created by American Tortoise Rescue to help people celebrate and protect turtles, tortoises and their natural habitats.
According to Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife, there are five species of turtles native to Washington state: the Green sea turtle, the Leatherback sea turtle, the Loggerhead sea turtle, the Northwest pond turtle and the Painted turtle.
If you see a turtle in one of the Inland Northwest’s bodies of water, it’s most likely a Painted turtle.
Painted turtles are easily identified by the yellow stripes on its head, legs and tail, as well as brightly colored red or orange coloring on its underside.
