SPOKANE, Wash. — You might see a few more block parties around Spokane this summer due to a newly approved city ordinance.
On Monday night, Spokane City Council voted to approve and adopt the ‘Play Streets & Neighborhood Block Party Program.’
The ordinance explicitly allows for the temporary closure of non-arterial streets so neighborhoods can host community gatherings and block parties.
“True safety begins with knowing your neighbors,” said Councilmember Kitty Klitzke. “This ordinance provides a unique opportunity for residents to unite and create a supportive network that enhances our collective well-being. The Play Streets ordinance promotes safer neighborhoods and community-oriented engagement through active neighbor engagement and connection.”
From June through Halloween, a special event permit will be required for a play street or block party closure.
Permit fees will be waived for any event that is free and open to the public. The event must be on a non-arterial street, no greater than one block, not including an intersection and requiring no traffic control.
