COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — The community gathered Friday night for the Make It Pink Gala to honor the legacy of three University of Idaho students killed in Moscow in 2022.
The event raises money for the Maddie, Kaylee and Xana Scholarship Fund, named after University of Idaho students Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves and Xana Kernodle who were murdered in 2022.
“It’s a pretty color and it’s light and love,” said Angela Navejas, co-founder of the Made with Kindness foundation.
The nonprofit recently gave $30,000 to 12 students in the Kootenai County area.
Navejas started the foundation with her daughter Ashlin, who was best friends with Madison Mogen.
“They were really special to my daughter and I and to a lot of other people, family, friends, this community,” Navejas said. “And so we just wanted to take something that was a big tragedy and turn it into something beautiful.”
The gala featured music and local businesses. Madison Lunde owns Heart of Gold, a jewelry business at the event.
“I hope that it just makes them feel love to help bring peace and just support to their families and to the people around them,” Lunde said.
Twenty percent of Heart of Gold’s sales will go to the foundation.
The scholarships support students who do community service, like the three victims did.
“They’re kind. They did things within the community. They did a lot of community service. They have a lot of aspirations and dreams and goals, just like all three of the girls did,” Navejas said.
