COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Hundreds of protesters and counter-protesters are gathering near Appleway Avenue and Highway 95 in Coeur d’Alene as part of a nationwide No Kings movement.
“I’m one of the people that strongly objected to much of what Trump has done,” said Tom Hern, who joined the No Kings movement.
More than 1,800 peaceful protests across all 50 states are planned for Saturday through the No Kings Movement. Organizers of the movement say they seek to reject “authoritarianism, billionaire-first politics, and the militarization of our democracy.”
Saturday is also the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army and President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday. A military parade plans to roll through Washington, D.C. to honor the U.S. Army’s anniversary.
In Coeur d’Alene, the protest kicked off officially at noon with both protesters and counter-protesters present.
“The No Kings business, a lot of us don’t even understand because there hasn’t been any sort of monarchical ideas or anything propositioned really,” said Austin Meadows, who was protesting against the No Kings movement.
While tensions ran high, the protests remained non-violent.
Throughout the event, undercover officers and visible law enforcement maintained a constant presence to ensure order.
Nearly all of the protesters left the area by 3 p.m. once organizers let them know the event was wrapping up.
This is a developing story.
