STATE LINE, Idaho — The death toll from Sunday’s violent carjacking spree has risen to three after motorcyclist Richard Embree succumbed to his injuries.
According to family, Embree died on Wednesday after going into cardiac arrest at an area hospital.
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office says Embree was hit by 43-year-old Ryan Tietsort while he was doing “donuts” in a stolen vehicle at State Line Village on Sunday morning.
During the spree, Tietsort was also accused of shooting and killing Gary Hill, a good Samaritan who tried to protect people during the carjacking.
The violent incident unfolded on Father’s Day morning, creating chaos across both Idaho and Washington.
Deputies say Tietsort was armed when he began the carjacking spree in Spokane Valley before driving toward Idaho. Hill was shot and killed while reportedly trying to help a woman who was being targeted.
Tietsort was eventually shot and killed by law enforcement in Spokane Valley.
“I’m glad he did. The best thing I can say is I’m very thankful that he did it and he helped, you know, save lives and help protect other people,” said Charles Hill, the victim’s son.
Charles Hill said he was following the unfolding crimes through a news app, unaware that his father’s life had been taken. The timing added heartbreak for the family — his sisters had already called to wish their father a happy Father’s Day, but Gary Hill had already died.
The family has set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral and service costs.
