SPOKANE, Wash. — Four Mt Spokane High School seniors saved a man’s life when they found him slumped over in his car at a South Hill Panda Express.
Connor Jansen, Keanu Richardson, Brayden Craft and Dylan Jarvis were on lunch break from their ensemble competition at Ferris High School when they noticed the man’s car blocking traffic in the parking lot.
“I go up to him and shake his shoulder to see if he’s responding… and he… he didn’t respond,” Jansen said.
Jansen ran into the restaurant for help while his friends called 911 and put the man’s car in park. They worked together to get the man out of his car.
A Panda Express employee came outside to help and began CPR.
“She was able to check if he was still breathing and had a pulse. And the 911 lady asked to continue CPR just in case,” Jansen said.
When the employee needed help, Craft took over CPR even though he wasn’t certified.
“I’m not certified, but freshman year I took a semester of health where a local fire department came down and taught us how to do CPR so I was trying to remember that the best I could,” Craft said.
The students kept the man alive until paramedics arrived.
“It was kind of crazy to think that, like, even though we’re just kids, we were able to accomplish something like that and make it so the paramedics did get there in time to save him,” Richardson said.
The four seniors have played music together for years, which helped them work as a team during the emergency.
“We wanted to try our hardest to make sure he walked out alive,” Jarvis said.
After the man was safe, the students returned to their competition at Ferris High School. They performed their final piece and won regionals that afternoon.
Craft said he’s interested in going into the medical field after graduation. All four students want to get CPR certified in the future.
