Sturgill Simpson is moving deeper into his Johnny Blue Skies era, and a new album is on the way. In a statement shared with Billboard, Johnny Blue Skies & the Dark Clouds confirmed Mutiny After Midnight will arrive March 13 through High Top Mountain Records, in partnership with Atlantic Music Group’s Atlantic Outpost.
The release is being billed as vinyl, CD, and cassette only. The lineup includes Miles Miller on drums and backing vocals, Laur Joamets on lead guitar, Kevin Black on bass, and Robbie Crowell on keys and sax. The album was produced by Johnny Blue Skies and recorded at Easy Eye Sound Studios.
Simpson says the band set out with one clear goal: make a dance record. He later added on Instagram that the project leans hard into groove, shaped by late night bus listening and concept records that answered dark times with motion and intimacy. He describes the songs as split between two poles: the dark state of the world and the bright state of love.
