SPOKANE, Wash. — A Spokane woman has been sentenced to just over a year in prison for hitting and killing a man with her car in downtown Spokane.
According to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office, 34-year-old Jarae D. Schreiber was driving in downtown Spokane in June of 2023. Schreiber was going through an intersection with a green light when she hit a man crossing the street with two other people.
Schreiber said she did not see the people crossing until she hit the man. The man was taken to the hospital where he died a few days later.
Last month, a jury found Schreiber guilty of Vehicular Homicide (Disregard for Safety of Others). The jury could not reach a unanimous answer as to whether she was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time or whether she was driving in a reckless manner.
On Friday, she was sentenced to 15 months in prison. She will also serve a year in community custody once released from prison.
