SPOKANE, Wash. — The driver of the STA double-decker bus who crashed into a viaduct in downtown Spokane on January 18th, injuring seven people, was cited for 2nd degree negligent driving.
According to the police report, Wayne Morgan, 65, was driving the bus. He told police he was following the map and GPS provided by STA on his route. Police noted impairment was not a factor.
One officer wrote in the police report, they cited the driver because he was driving the double-decker bus under a bridge that is ‘clearly marked and impassible by the vehicle he was operating.’
Nine passengers were on board. Seven of them were sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Five sat on the upper deck and four sat on the lower deck.
STA confirmed the driver was off route when the crash happened.
The double-decker buses returned to the roads last week, as the Spokane Transit Authority says drivers are going through another round of training before they’ll welcome passengers back on board. STA took the double-decker fleet out of commission right after the crash, to investigate what went wrong and how to fix it.
