SPOKANE — The City of Spokane has officially recognized next week as “Black Maternal Health Week,” and one local nonprofit is celebrating the accomplishment.
Shades of Motherhood Network is an organization that acts as a resource for women who are experiencing the journey of motherhood in Spokane. This week, they have planned five events that are open to anyone for free, even those who aren’t mothers.
The events will teach solutions to the ongoing health crisis that Black mothers face while also making it fun to attend.
Stephanie Courtney, executive director of Shades of Motherhood Network, shared what the takeaways would be from the events.
“There’s been enough research that shows that sisterhood is medicine. Community is medicine. When you’re dealing with that postpartum depression, you’re feeling sadness. You need to be in spaces that are going to uplift your spirit,” Courtney said.
She also shared the event that they are most excited for this week.
“The fashion show is going to be so much fun. It’s called ‘Dear Sis: Motherhood in Motion’. This is going to be on the runway. We have so many great people that are going to be joining us and talking and sharing, what fashion looks like in different decades,” Courtney said.
