COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — In honor of fallen Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Frank J. Harwood, a new initiative has launched to better serve youth and first responder families in the community.
The FJH initiative aims to offer youth and First Responder Mentors outdoor experiences, life skills education, mental health support and mentorship to help them build resilience, confidence and leadership skills.
“Frank lived a life of courage, compassion, and quiet strength,” said a spokesperson for the FJH Initiative. “By investing in youth and those who serve our communities, we are carrying forward his legacy and helping build a future where resilience, connection, and hope are passed from one generation to the next.”
Chief Harwood was killed in the line of duty while responding to a fire on Canfield Mountain on June 29, 2025.
The FJH Initiative says it will continue Chief Harwood’s mission of service to the community and will work to create opportunities that strengthen individuals, families and the community as a whole.
