SPOKANE VALLEY — A major apartment fire damaged three buildings at a Spokane Valley complex Sunday afternoon, impacting approximately 60 people, according to the American Red Cross.
Spokane Valley Fire Department said crews arrived at the Eagle Rock apartment complex at 1:23 p.m. to find fire extending across all five floors of one building. Around 60 firefighters spent hours fighting the flames and smoke.
Fire officials say the upper apartments sustained extensive fire damage, with at least half the units in the building experiencing smoke and water damage.
“We were actually talking about how scary fire can be, because it is uncontrollable at some points. But it looks scary,” said Charlene Schiller, a woman who drove by the scene to check on the condition of the fire and people she knows in the area.
The intense heat and strong winds created especially challenging conditions for firefighters. Due to the volume of fire and concerns about the building’s structural stability, a five-alarm response was initiated. Crews then transitioned from an offensive attack to a defensive strategy.
SVFD said the fire sparked three separate brush fires in the surrounding area, all contained to approximately two acres.
No injuries have been reported from the apartment fire, though Spokane Valley Fire Department says several pets were lost in the incident.
Volunteers with the American Red Cross are in contact with those affected and are evaluating needs including food, shelter, and clothing. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Fire officials say they are still gathering information on the cause of the fire.
