SPOKANE, Wash. — Firefighters responded to a fire at Lumberbeard Brewing early Sunday morning around 4 am. When they got there, they say there was a fire on the roof. Firefighters were eventually able to contain it, but it damaged most of the brewery’s in house office.
The office sustained heavy damage, with parts of the ceiling left hanging and ash and debris scattered inside and outside of it, in the tasting room.
Bret Gordon, part-owner of Lumberbeard Brewing, received a call that there was a fire around 4:30 a.m. He says by the time he arrived at the brewery, firefighters had already put it out.
“It’s already kind of our busiest time of the year because fresh hops season starts like this week. Now, having to navigate this kind of fire mitigation rebuilding project in addition to that, I’m just kinda feeling overwhelmed,” Gordon said.
Spokane Fire and Police are still investigating the cause of the fire. However, Gordon said fire investigators told him early in their investigation that the fire may have been intentionally set. The Spokane Police Department has not confirmed whether they have identified a suspect.
Gordon noted that a security gate at the brewery was accidentally broken by a delivery driver about two weeks before the fire. Since the incident, the gate has not been able to close properly.
The brewery will remain closed temporarily while the business completes fire cleanup. Gordon estimates the closure will last at least another two weeks.
“We can keep brewing beer, keep packing up beer, keep on our schedule. We didn’t lose any product, which is obviously a super blessing. But we sell a decent amount of beer out of our tasting room, so that avenue is kind of cut off,” Gordon said.
