Spokane — With fall sports wrapping up and colder weather settling in, the Spokane Youth Sports Association is bringing back an affordable option to keep kids engaged through the early winter months.
The SYSA is bringing back its NHL Street Hockey Academy for a second year after a successful inaugural season, offering a program that removes common obstacles preventing children from trying hockey.
The five-week program introduces third through sixth graders to street hockey through the national NHL Street Hockey initiative. Unlike traditional ice hockey, the street version making it accessible to more children.
“Obviously with regular ice hockey you have to skate, and you have to have somewhere to skate,” said Taylor McBride, Lead Sports Coordinator with SYSA. “So, the NHL wants to make sure kids get exposure and a chance to try it out, and that is what SYSA is all about too: eliminating barriers and getting kids involved.”
Each one-hour weekly session balances skills development with competitive play. Kids spend the first 30 minutes learning teamwork, movement, and stick handling before participating in 30 minutes of scrimmaging against other participants. All kids are placed on teams named after NHL franchises and receive official NHL Street jerseys.
SYSA also partners with the Spokane Chiefs for the program. Last year, a highlight for young athletes was meeting Boomer, the Chiefs’ mascot, at a practice session. Kids who participate also have a chance to get free tickets to a Chiefs game.
Registration is $105 dollars, but SYSA offers financial assistance that can reduce the cost by 50% for families who need it. All necessary equipment is provided. Kids are asked to bring athletic shoes, comfortable clothes, and a labeled water bottle.
Sessions take place at the Warehouse on Hamilton on November 7th, 14th, and 21st, and December 5th and 12th.
Registration closes Thursday, October 15. Families can register through the SYSA website.
