SPOKANE, Wash. — A Spokane nonprofit plans to build a low-income housing community specifically designed to help domestic violence survivors escape abusive situations and rebuild their lives.
Mujeres in Action announced plans for “Casa Mia,” a 13-townhome complex that will provide safe housing for singles and families with children who have experienced domestic violence. The organization already owns land in the Shiloh Hills neighborhood where the development will be constructed.
The organization said lack of affordable housing options and support systems can often cause people to remain trapped in abusive situations.
“Many people who go through domestic violence situations tend to be very isolated from their communities,” said Sebastian Ruiz of Mujeres in Action. “So, this is an opportunity for us to directly impact their recovery, but also funnel them back into the community and remake their networks.”
The Casa Mia complex will feature shared community spaces designed to help residents connect with one another and rebuild their social networks. Beyond providing safe housing, the development will offer comprehensive support services to help survivors achieve long-term stability and independence.
Residents will have access to legal services, mental health counseling, job placement assistance and dedicated case managers to coordinate care and support throughout their recovery process.
Mujeres in Action is currently seeking funding for the $8.4 million project through grant applications and community donations. The organization hopes to secure enough funding to break ground on the development this summer.
