SPOKANE — The family of Spencer Wirth has filed a wrongful death lawsuit alleging Spokane County Jail staff ignored his medical emergency two years ago.
Wirth was hit by a car and later collapsed at his mother’s home. When she called for an ambulance, he was arrested on an outstanding warrant and sent to the emergency room.
“Mr. Wirth arrived with very, very serious symptoms. He could not walk more than a very short distance without fainting or collapsing,” said Colin Prince, the attorney representing Wirth’s estate.
Wirth was released from the hospital after hours without seeing a doctor. At the jail, he collapsed in his cell and pressed a panic alarm but was ignored by staff.
“Two deputies who were tasked with monitoring the medical floor and ensuring the inmate’s health, were watching TV on a phone,” Prince said.
The Department of Health found the jail needed to improve procedures for watch cells and emergency response after Wirth’s death.
A NaphCare spokeperson said:
We extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. Wirth for their loss. We received the complaint a short time ago and are reviewing the details. At this stage, we can clarify that Everhealth — a sister company to NaphCare — was the contracted provider at the facility during the period in question. Our focus right now is understanding the allegations fully and ensuring all information is reviewed carefully.
Wirth’s mother said: “Those involved must be held accountable, but more than anything, I don’t want any more sons, dads, fiancés, or mothers to ever be treated this way again.”
Spokane County and MultiCare declined to comment. NaphCare, contracted to provide jail healthcare, is reviewing the allegations.
