SPOKANE, Wash. – TSA will charge a $45 fee every time you fly if you don’t have a Real ID by February.
You may still see delays at security and extra screenings even if you pay the fee. The fee applies to all flights if you don’t have another acceptable ID like a passport or military ID.
The Idaho Transportation Department says more people are applying for Star Cards, Idaho’s Real ID.
“We’re really just trying to help people get what they need so they can fly and not be held up at the gate, not miss their flights, whether it’s something they’re missing for work or something personal,” said Britt Rosenthal from the Idaho Department of Transportation.
To get Idaho’s Star Card, you need proof of residency, proof of your Social Security number, and a birth certificate or passport.
Washington recommends making an appointment and bringing the right documents to get an Enhanced License.
“On our website dol.wa.gov, we have an enhanced document tool where you can find out exactly what you need to bring for your specific case, or you can download a printable checklist,” said Rob Wieman from the Washington Department of Licensing.
If you decide to pay the fee instead, you can pay online or at the airport. Airport payment can take up to 30 minutes.
If you show up without a Real ID or passport, expect delays, extra screenings, or being turned away.
“That fee does not guarantee you entry into TSA. You could be delayed which of course, you have the potential of missing a flight,” said Rosenthal.
The fee lasts for 10 days. If you travel for more than 10 days, you may have to pay twice.
