MULLAN, Idaho — Lookout Pass opened for the season as the First Alert Weather Team predicts the mountain could see anywhere from one to two feet of snow by Sunday night.
“We’re really excited. It could really be dumping here for the next three days,” said Matt Sawyer, director of marketing at Lookout Pass.
Opening day at Lookout Pass is always weather dependent, but this weekend’s forecast appears favorable for ski enthusiasts.
“As I always say, all of our snow here at Lookout Pass is heavenly sent,” Sawyer said.
Sawyer, who made early runs on opening day, recommended specific areas for skiers.
“I got out and made a few turns early so my personal feedback is head to Huckleberry Ridge. That’s got the best snow on it,” he said.
Several skiers arrived early for opening day. Craig Yuill was among those who got to the mountain before it opened.
“Got here early — earlier than it opened,” Yuill said. “I’m probably coming back Sunday. Maybe see if I can bring the kiddos up here because it’s a great family mountain.”
Courtney Zehring planned to maximize her time on the mountain during the expected snowfall.
“We have passes and we’re going to stay here all weekend until the snow is all eaten up,” Zehring said.
For skiers concerned about driving conditions, Zehring noted her experience with winter weather.
“We live in Missoula so we drive in the snow a lot,” she said.
Sawyer addressed accessibility concerns, highlighting the resort’s convenient location.
“I-90 is a major thoroughfare, so it’s got a high priority — priority one for paving this road,” Sawyer said.
The mountain’s parking lot is located just 200 yards off the freeway. The resort also provides cameras so skiers and snowboarders can check conditions on roads and slopes before heading out.
Pete Delmoe praised the mountain during his opening day visit.
“It’s just an amazing little local mountain. Everyone’s so nice and the snow is just incredible,” Delmoe said.
Sawyer encouraged visitors to take advantage of the favorable conditions.
“Come up here and have a great time because as we know most skiers love big snow,” he said.
