SPOKANE, Wash. — Eleven-year-old Jada Colwell has spent the past week in the hospital, but her day brightened considerably when superheroes walked into her room to inspire her to be brave.
The surprise visit was part of Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital’s annual event, called Superheroes for Kids Day.
“They’re coming and supporting all the kids that are in the hospital and supporting all the kids that they’re going through, stuff that they shouldn’t have to go through,” said Jada, who receives treatment for epilepsy.
The health problems have been a struggle throughout Jada’s life, but she finds inspiration in one particular hero — Supergirl.
“She lets us know that even if you’re a girl, you can be strong and anything is possible,” Jada said.
Each patient received five minutes with the superheroes in their rooms, along with special T-shirts and goody bags. While the event generated many smiles from patients, it also fundraised thousands for the hospital.
Children’s Miracle Network say’s sponsors gave $75,000 in donations for this event. That money will go directly back to Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital.
For the first time, the Children’s Miracle Network president, Aimee Daily, participated in the hospital’s event, dressing as Violet from “The Incredibles.” Daily said the experience provided hope not just for the young patients, but for their families as well.
“There’s a lot of emotion, a lot of energy, and they’re scared too, right? So when they get to be alongside us and they get to see their kid, just be a kid for a few moments, it’s all worth it,” Daily said.
Children’s Miracle Network says last year Spokane donated $2.2 million to Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital through their network.
