INCHELIUM, Wash.— Firefighters are racing against time to contain the Modrite Fire as it threatens the small community of Inchelium on the Colville Reservation. Evacuation orders forced all residents from the town as the rapidly spreading wildfire continues to grow under dangerous conditions.
The modrite fire doubled in size overnight, with a total of 35 square miles of land scorched. The entire community in Inchelium has been evacuated, with no knowledge of when they might be able to return home.
More than 600 firefighters are deployed across the fire zone, facing another challenging day as the blaze continues to burn through dry fuels under hot and windy conditions. Air support operations remain completely grounded due to heavy smoke and low visibility, limiting the tools available to firefighters battling the blaze from the ground.
As of now, no deaths have been reported, though officials have not released an official count of structures destroyed. Heavy smoke is causing mapping issues that prevent accurate assessments of the fire’s full extent, meaning the actual acreage burned is likely higher than reported.
The Northern Rockies Complex Incident Management Team has designated the Modrite Fire as an incredibly dangerous situation with conditions expected to worsen tomorrow. Jeni Garcin, Northern Rockies Public Information Officer, emphasized the unpredictable nature of the threat.
“This is wildfire and it’s unpredictable and we’re dealing with some really critical conditions. We’re dealing with some extreme weather. We’re dealing with extreme dryness, and we haven’t had a chance to recover in the last few weeks,” Garcin said.
Red flag warnings across the state tomorrow are expected to significantly impact fire behavior. Garcin urged residents to stay informed and prepared.
“Just be paying attention because tomorrow across the state, those red flags are gonna really be impactful on these fires and so wherever you’re at, know where these fires are and be paying attention to the alerts,” Garcin said.
The fire became the nation’s highest priority fire this morning, a designation that triggers the deployment of additional resources. Officials say more crews and equipment will begin flowing into the region to support firefighting efforts. However, Garcin cautioned that the fire is unlikely to slow down in the near term.
A large collection of agencies are coordinating the response, including the Department of Natural Resources, the Northern Rockies Complex Incident Management Team, and the U.S. Wildland Fire Service. The coordinated effort demonstrates the magnitude of the threat posed by the expanding fire.
Evacuees from Inchelium are being directed to an evacuation center established at Kettle Falls Middle School, where they can access resources.
Fire officials are urging residents throughout the Inland Northwest to stay informed as fire season continues. With high temperatures and dangerous fire conditions expected today and tomorrow, officials recommend that everyone prepare a go bag and stay alert to evacuation orders and alerts in their area.
