SPOKANE, Wash. — Nine Mile Rd. has officially reopened, and the Nine Mile Store has transformed into a lifeline for people who have been impacted by the Autumn Lane and Old Trails fires.
The gas station has been standing for over 100 years and is now giving back to its community when it matters most.
“It’s just neighbors helping neighbors,” said store owner, Corrine Rogers. “Just coming together, you know, and that’s what this whole area is all about.”
The donations are laid outside of the store right next to the gas station. There are emergency supplies including food, water, and hygiene products. But apart from the basic necessities, Rogers says her community had different needs she needed to address, which led her to get donations of livestock feed and farm tools.
“Out in this area, this is country,” Rogers said. “People have farm animals, they have horses, they have cows, they have rabbits, they have goats, chickens. They all need food.”
A truckload of donations arrived Monday, funded by a church in Tennessee. The shipment included wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels, cleaning supplies, and other essential farm tools that people may have lost in the fires and use daily for their livelihoods.
For parents, there are baby supplies like diapers, wipes, formula, bottles, and even toys.
Volunteers have been sorting donations and helping people find what they need. They have put together “grab and go” hygiene bags with essentials like toothbrushes, toothpaste, and soap.
“These two kids, you know, [they have] enough heart that says, you know what? Yeah, we’re going to come down and help you. We’re going to be your muscle. We’re going to be your 4-wheel driver,” Rogers said.
Rogers says she will leave the gas station lights on after hours so people can stop by and collect donations at any time. She says the items will remain outside the store for easy access.
