SPOKANE, Wash. — A Spokane Police Department officer returned a stolen bike to an 8-year-old boy who lost everything in the recent fires in Spokane.
On August 20th around 8:30 p.m., a Sergeant was flagged down by a father near River Park Square. The father explained that his son’s brand-new bike and helmet had been stolen from the bike rack despite being secured. The family had arrived at the mall around 5:45 p.m. and discovered the theft just hours later.
The father shared that he had purchased the bike specifically for his son after they lost their home and possessions in the Spokane Complex Fires.
Officers reviewed video footage from the mall and identified a male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and a face mask taking the boy’s red CO-OP brand bike. The suspect had arrived on a different bike before stealing the child’s bicycle.
The responding Sergeant distributed photographs of the stolen bike to patrol officers throughout the department to help locate it.
The next day, on August 21st, an officer spotted the bike near S. State St and W. Pacific Ave. The officer confirmed the serial number matched the stolen bike and made arrangements to return it to the young boy.
The bike theft suspect remains unidentified and has not been located.
