Idaho voters appear to be largely in favor of Constitutional Amendment HJR5, which specifies that non-citizens of the United States are not qualified to vote in Idaho elections.
As of 11:18 p.m. on election night, 63.7% of voters voted ‘yes’ on the amendment, compared to 36.3% of votes against.
Those against the bill say it is unnecessary because citizenship is already a requirement to vote.
Supporters say the resolution clarifies that requirement since the current language doesn’t expressly bar non-citizens from voting.
If the resolution passes, it would add the sentence “No person who is not a citizen of the United States shall be a qualified elector in any election held within the state of Idaho” to the state’s constitution.
Federal statuses already make it a crime for non-citizens to vote in any federal election.
