OLYMPIA, Wash – Calling his campaign a “grassroots coalition” and crediting his travel across the state, Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson issued a statement in response to the Associated Press calling the race for governor in his favor.
As of 9:00 p.m. on election night, Ferguson leads Republican Dave Reichert by more than 300,000 votes.
Less than an hour after the polls closed, AP declared Ferguson the winner.
“I am honored that Washingtonians have chosen me to fight for them,” Ferguson said. “To the thousands of supporters and volunteers who helped make this victory possible — thank you.”
“Thank you to Congressman Dave Reichert for running a hard-fought campaign and his many years of public service. I wish him the very best in the next chapter of his life,” he continued.
Reichert had not yet released a statement as of the AP declaration.
Ferguson assumes the office vacated by Jay Inslee, who chose not to run for a fourth term.
Washington hasn’t elected a Republican governor since 1980.
